The tenor Marcus Ullmann was born in Olbernhau near Dresden. He started singing as a member of the famous Dresden Kreuzchor at the age of ten, thereafter studying with Hartmut Zabel and Margret Trappe-Wiel at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden. Later he studied with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin and with Marga Schiml in Karlsruhe. Graduating with distinction, he soon was a guest singer at the German Opera Houses Staatstheater Mainz and Semperoper Dresden. The following engagements included roles at the Teatro La Fenice, Opera House Rome, Teatro Communale Firence and Los Angeles Opera. Recently he appeared in Boston at the Early Music Festival as Nero in Monteverdi's "L'incoronazione di Poppea". He has performed as a concert singer widely throughout Europe, in North and South America and in Japan. Conductors with whom he has worked in a range of repertoire include Frieder Bernius, Ivor Bolton, Riccardo Chailly, Marcus Creed, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Kent Nagano, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Helmuth Rilling and Peter Schreier. He often sings with the Dresden Kreuzchor, the Windsbach Knabenchor and the Thomanerchor Leipzig. As a recitalist, Marcus Ullmann has been a guest at such festivals as the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the European Music Festival Stuttgart, Kuhmo in Finland, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, the Moritzburg Chamber Music Festival and many others both in Germany and internationally. He has also given recitals at the Wigmore Hall London, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Opera House Cairo, as well as the Musashino Shimin Bunka Kaikan Hall in Tokyo. Most frequently he works together with Camillo Radicke, Alexander Schmalcz and Martin Stadtfeld. Radio and TV broadcasts as well as numerous recordings reveal his talent. Recently released were Bach's "Saint John's Passion" with the Thomanerchor, Bach Cantatas with "Il Gardellino" and "Adelaide" on Martin Stadtfeld's CD "Der junge Beethoven". In the near future, Marcus Ullmann will be heard on the "Wiegenlieder" CD by CarusVerlag as well as on a recording of Brahms-Quartets with Helmut Deutsch. |
